William Paul Troost-Ekong known as William Troost Ekong is a professional football who plays centre back position for Italian club Udinese and Nigeria Super Eagles. Troost-Ekong born in 1st of September in 1993 at Netherlands into a mixed Dutch and Nigerian family. It makes him eligible to play for both Netherlands and Nigeria in international football, however, he opted to represent Nigeria. He started his first game in the Eredivisie on 21 September 2013 against RKC Waalwijk. But previously made his unofficial debut on 29 June, in a friendly game against RWE Eemsmond.
He signed a 2 year contract on 23 July 2013 in the Netherlands following his release from Tottenham Hotspur. In youth level, he played for English club such as Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur then he began his senior career in the Netherlands with FC Groningen and FC Dordrecht. With FC Dordrecht he won the Jupiler League Play-off Final earning them promotion to the Eredivisie. He was linked with aboard transfers to Celtic among others, however he signed for Belgian club KAA Gent in July 2015 then immediately joined Norwegian club FK Haugesund on loan. In July 2017, Troost-Ekong signed for Turkish club Bursaspor of the Super Lig then he joined to Italian Serie A club Udinese in August 2018.
Troost-Ekong was born in the Netherlands to a Nigerian father, and Dutch mother Eleanore Troost. He represented the Netherlands at under-19 and under-20 youth levels. In May 2015, Troost-Ekong was called up to the senior Nigeria squad for the qualifiying matches of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon. He made his debut for the Super Eagles of Nigeria in a match against Chad played on June 13, 2015. The match ended 2-0 in favour of Nigeria and he played the full 90 minutes.
He made 3 starts for the senior team in 2016 before being selected by Nigeria’s under-23 team in their 35-man provisional squad for the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics. In May 2018 he was named in Nigeria’s preliminary 30 man squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. In April 2019 he said that playing for Nigeria was his “best decision ever”.[
